The Further Education and Training phase of South African schooling: Grades 10, 11, and 12. During the FET phase every learner takes seven subjects: four compulsory (Home Language, First Additional Language, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation) and three electives from the CAPS approved list.

Elective choices made at Grade 10 determine which university programmes and TVET pathways are open at matric. A school that does not offer Physical Sciences closes the door to medicine and engineering; a school offering only Mathematical Literacy closes the door to any programme requiring Mathematics.

Switching schools or examination bodies during the FET phase is difficult because SBA records may not transfer cleanly.
