An operational mechanism for BioConomy coordination drawn from Will Ruddick’s work at the Grassroots Economics Foundation. A pool takes contributions of commitments (labour, skills, materials, mentorship) from its members, who can then draw on commitments from others. It is governed through four protocol functions:

  • Curation: what belongs in the pool.
  • Valuation: what each commitment is worth relative to others.
  • Limitation: how much any member can contribute or withdraw.
  • Exchange: how commitments circulate.

In the proposed Learning Campus a commitment pool would allow families unable to pay full school fees in rand to contribute through the pool instead, without treating that as charity or a discount.
