This variable is where aspiration meets arithmetic. Many parents will have already filtered by language and logistics before reaching it. For those who have not, cost may be the first filter. Either way, the honest version of this calculation includes items that school fee schedules do not advertise.
The full cost, not the fee
A school’s published fee is one line in a larger budget. The actual annual cost of schooling a child includes:
- Tuition fees (or zero, for no-fee public schools)
- Transport (fuel, lift club contributions, scholar transport, or boarding)
- Boarding fees (if applicable)
- Uniforms (initial set plus replacements)
- Stationery, textbooks, and prescribed materials (some schools include these; some do not)
- Devices and data (compulsory for online schooling; increasingly expected at physical schools)
- Extracurricular and sport levies (often charged separately from tuition)
- Examination fees (for SACAI and IEB candidates, examination registration carries a per-subject fee)
- Lost parent income or productivity (the hardest to quantify: the hours spent driving, supervising online learning, or organising logistics are hours not spent earning)
Parents should build the full annual figure, not the tuition figure, when comparing options.
Cost by option category
Public school, in-valley: Emil Weder Secondary
Emil Weder is a government school in Genadendal. Its quintile classification and fee status should be confirmed directly, but public schools in historically disadvantaged communities in the Western Cape are typically Quintile 1 to 3 (no-fee). Even if fees apply, they will be modest and subject to exemption for families who qualify.
Estimated annual cost for a Greyton family:
Transport (7 km each way): minimal, especially if the child cycles or walks part of the way. Uniforms and stationery: in the low thousands. Total: likely under R5,000 per year.
This is the lowest-cost option by a wide margin. The constraint is language, not money.
Public school, Caledon: Overberg High School
Overberg High School is Quintile 5 (fee-paying). The fee amount is set by the SGB and is not published in the sources available; it should be confirmed directly. Quintile 5 public school fees in the Western Cape typically range from R5,000 to R25,000 per year, depending on the school.
Estimated annual cost for a Greyton family (day attendance):
| Item | Low estimate | High estimate |
|---|---|---|
| School fees | R5,000 | R25,000 |
| Transport (own car, solo) | R40,000 | R50,000 |
| Transport (lift club, 4 families) | R10,000 | R15,000 |
| Transport (scholar service) | R15,000 | R30,000 |
| Uniforms, stationery | R3,000 | R6,000 |
| Sport/extracurricular levies | R1,000 | R5,000 |
| Total (own car, solo) | R49,000 | R86,000 |
| Total (lift club) | R19,000 | R51,000 |
The transport cost dominates. A lift club cuts the total roughly in half. A functioning lift club is the difference between this option being affordable and being prohibitive for middle-income families.
If weekly boarding is available:
Boarding fees at government school hostels in rural Western Cape towns typically run R20,000 to R40,000 per year. Add school fees and incidentals, and the total sits in the R30,000 to R70,000 range. This may be comparable to, or cheaper than, daily transport by car. Overberg High School has hostels [MS]. Whether English-stream learners can board, and at what fee, is TBV.
Online school
Online providers span a wide fee range. The supervision cost (a parent at home, or a paid facilitator in a microschool arrangement) is the hidden variable.
| Provider | Approximate annual fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Syllabis | Under R6,000 | Materials-led, minimal live interaction |
| Impaq | R8,000 to R15,000 | Parent-facilitated, CAPS materials |
| CambriLearn (CAPS) | R15,000 to R40,000 | Varies by package; recorded + live |
| Wingu Academy | R20,000 to R45,000 | Live online teaching |
| UCT Online High School | ~R36,000 | Live classes, support advisors |
| Teneo | ~R36,000 | AI-assisted, live classes |
| Curro Online | Varies | IEB pathway available |
Add-on costs:
- Device: R5,000 to R15,000 (once-off, replaced every 3 to 4 years)
- Internet: R500 to R1,500/month (fibre or high-capacity mobile data), or R6,000 to R18,000/year
- SACAI examination registration: a per-subject fee applies; total varies but budget R2,000 to R5,000 for a full subject set
- Supervision/facilitation (if not a parent): highly variable
Estimated annual cost (parent supervises, mid-range provider):
R25,000 to R55,000, including data and device amortisation.
Estimated annual cost (microschool with shared facilitator, 6 families):
Provider fee R25,000 to R40,000 per child, plus shared facilitator cost of R15,000 to R25,000 per child per year (assuming a facilitator at R10,000 to R15,000/month shared six ways), plus venue, data, and devices. Total per child: R45,000 to R80,000.
Independent school, in-valley: Silverwood (if constituted)
No fee schedule has been published. Comparable Waldorf schools in the Western Cape provide a reference range:
| School | Annual tuition (approx.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stellenbosch Waldorf School | R52,000 to R89,000 | Day school, Sustainability Institute campus |
| Constantia Waldorf School | R60,000 to R90,000 | Day school, southern suburbs Cape Town |
| Michael Oak (Cape Town) | R70,000 to R95,000 | Day school, includes Class 13 matric year |
If Silverwood fees land in a comparable range, the annual cost for a Greyton family would be tuition (R50,000 to R90,000) plus minimal transport (the school is in the valley). Total: R55,000 to R100,000.
Whether Silverwood would offer bursaries or a sliding-scale fee structure is unknown. For a school serving a valley with the income diversity of Greyton and Genadendal, affordability design is a founding question, not an afterthought.
Independent boarding school (further afield)
The project’s expensive schools research documents the full range. A selection of Western Cape boarding options:
| School | Annual boarding + tuition (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Bridge House (Franschhoek) | R180,000 to R250,000 |
| Somerset College (Somerset West) | R150,000 to R220,000 |
| Bishops (Rondebosch) | R300,000 to R400,000+ |
These figures exclude uniforms, textbooks, sport tours, and sundries. The all-in cost at a high-fee boarding school can exceed R300,000 to R500,000 per year. For most valley families, this is a bursary-or-nothing proposition.
The five-year number
High school is five years. Parents should multiply the annual cost by five and test whether the total is sustainable across the full period. A family that can afford R80,000 in Grade 8 needs to confirm it can still afford R80,000 (plus annual increases) in Grade 12. Withdrawing a child mid-stream because of cost is worse than choosing a sustainable option from the start.
| Option | Estimated 5-year cost (mid-range) |
|---|---|
| Emil Weder | R15,000 to R25,000 |
| Overberg High (lift club) | R100,000 to R250,000 |
| Overberg High (own car) | R250,000 to R430,000 |
| Online (parent supervises) | R125,000 to R275,000 |
| Online (microschool) | R225,000 to R400,000 |
| Silverwood (if comparable to Waldorf peers) | R275,000 to R500,000 |
| Boarding school (mid-range independent) | R750,000 to R1,250,000 |
These are rough ranges. Every family’s actual number will differ. The point is the order of magnitude, not the precision.
Questions to settle before moving on
- What is your realistic annual budget for high school, including transport, devices, and all incidentals?
- Over five years, can you sustain that figure with annual fee increases of 5 to 8%?
- If your preferred option exceeds your budget, which concession are you prepared to make: a different school, a different transport arrangement, or a different curriculum?
- If a collective solution (lift club, microschool, dedicated transport) would make your preferred option affordable, are you prepared to commit to the coordination it requires?
- If bursaries or financial aid are available at your preferred school, have you confirmed the application process and timeline?
