Variable-by-variable assessment

1. Language of instruction

English and Afrikaans. The school operates bilingually and serves both language communities. For English-speaking Greyton families, this removes the language barrier that Emil Weder presents. For Afrikaans-speaking families, the school is equally accessible.

2. Daily logistics

Greyton to Sandbaai, Hermanus is approximately 80 km via the N2 and R43. Driving the full distance daily is not viable. But the school operates a bus service with routes covering Caledon, Stanford, Hermanus CBD, Kleinmond, Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay, Gansbaai, Arabella, and Vermont. The Caledon pickup is at the SPAR at 07:00, with afternoon drop-off at 16:00 (Fridays 14:00).

This changes the logistics for a Greyton family. The commute splits into two legs: Greyton to Caledon (35 km, ~35 minutes by car) and Caledon to Sandbaai (by school bus). The first leg is identical to the Overberg High commute and can be handled the same way: own car, lift club, or scholar transport.

Transport options and costs (Greyton to Caledon leg, detailed in Variable 2: Daily Logistics):

  • Own car, solo driver: ~R44,000/year in fuel, plus ~300 hours of driving time.
  • Lift club (4 families): ~R11,000 to R15,000/year per family.
  • Scholar transport service: ~R15,000 to R30,000/year per child (no operator confirmed for this route; TBV).

The school bus fee has not been confirmed. Curro bus services at other campuses typically charge R850 to R1,500/month (R10,000 to R18,000/year). TBV directly with Mr Harmse (chris.h@curroholdings.co.za).

The child’s day is long. A 06:15 departure from Greyton to reach the Caledon SPAR by 07:00, school from 07:45 to 15:00, bus back to Caledon by ~15:45, and home by ~16:30. That is roughly ten hours door to door, Monday to Thursday. Fridays are shorter (school ends 14:00).

School hours are 07:45 to 15:00 (Fridays to 14:00). The school does not offer boarding.

3. School type and registration

Independent school, WCED-registered. Part of the Curro Group, which operates over 180 campuses across South Africa. The school is governed by the Curro corporate structure rather than an SGB. Parents do not have the same governance role as in a public school.

The Curro Group is listed on the JSE (via Stadio Holdings). This means the school operates within a corporate accountability framework, but educational decisions are made centrally rather than locally.

4. Curriculum and examination body

CAPS curriculum assessed through the IEB (Independent Examinations Board). The IEB matric is widely regarded as rigorous and is accepted by all South African universities and most international institutions. This is a meaningful differentiator from the DBE/NSC examination that public schools write.

5. Cost

School fees (2026 estimate):

ComponentEstimate
Annual school fees (Grade 12)~R88,000
Annual school fees (Grade 8, estimated)~R80,000 to R85,000
Extra subject fees (8th, 9th, 10th subjects)R850/month per subject
Early payment discount3% to 5% if paid annually by 31 January

Additional costs for a Greyton family (bus + lift club model):

ComponentLow estimateHigh estimate
School fees (Grade 8)R80,000R88,000
School bus (Caledon to Sandbaai, TBV)R10,000R18,000
Transport to Caledon (lift club, 4 families)R10,000R15,000
Uniforms, stationery, devicesR5,000R10,000
Sport/extracurricular leviesR2,000R5,000
Estimated annual total (lift club)R107,000R136,000
Estimated annual total (own car, solo)R141,000R175,000

Five-year cost: R535,000 to R680,000 (lift club); R705,000 to R875,000 (solo driver).

The school fees are the dominant cost. Transport adds R20,000 to R33,000/year with a lift club, or R54,000 to R62,000/year solo. The lift club arithmetic is similar to Overberg High since the Greyton-to-Caledon leg is the same; the school bus handles the rest.

6. Pedagogy and values

The school emphasises project-based learning and self-discovery alongside standard academic instruction. Robotics and coding are integrated into the curriculum from Grade 8. Class sizes are capped at 25, which is smaller than most public schools and allows more individual attention.

The school has an on-site social worker and life-coach mentor, which suggests attention to pastoral care. Leadership camps and outreach programmes are part of the school calendar.

The Curro Group positions itself as combining academic rigour with holistic development. The quality of this in practice at the Hermanus campus would need to be assessed through a visit and conversations with current parents.

The school is not connected to the Ward 2 Schools Program or the BioHub. There is no place-based curriculum linking learning to the valley.

7. Subject availability

Senior Phase (Grades 8-9): English, Afrikaans, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Life Orientation, Creative Arts, Economic and Management Sciences (including Accounting), Robotics and Coding.

FET Phase (Grades 10-12) electives: Accounting, Business Studies, Drama, Geography, Life Sciences, Music, Physical Sciences, Information Technology, Visual Arts, Engineering Graphics and Design. Extended subject choices are available digitally with live instruction.

This is a wider subject range than most public schools in the region, including subjects (Drama, Music, IT, EGD) that smaller schools cannot sustain. The digital extension of the subject menu is a distinctive feature of the Curro model.

8. Post-school pathway

IEB matric. Full eligibility for all South African universities and most international institutions. The IEB examination is generally considered more demanding than the NSC, and university admissions offices are familiar with its grading standards.

The Curro Group achieved a 99% pass rate across 2,426 learners in the 2024 IEB matric. School-specific results for Curro Hermanus have not been confirmed, though at least one source reports a 100% pass rate in a recent year.

The Curro Alumni network provides post-school networking and career support.

9. Social and community considerations

The child returns home daily, which preserves the family connection to the valley. But the school day is long (roughly 06:15 to 16:30), leaving limited time for valley-based friendships and activities on weekdays. The child’s peer group centres on Hermanus.

For a child already connected to Hermanus (family, sport clubs, church), this transition is easier. For a child whose world is entirely in the valley, the adjustment is real, though less disruptive than boarding since the child sleeps at home.

The school’s extracurricular programme (sport, cultural activities, clubs) provides structure for social integration. Activities include athletics, cricket, tennis, swimming, rugby, soccer, netball, hockey, chess, choir, debate, and public speaking.

The school community reflects the demographics of families who can afford independent school fees in the Overberg.

10. Silverwood-specific

Not applicable.

Best fit

This school suits families where: the budget can sustain R107,000 to R136,000/year (with lift club); the family can organise or join a lift club for the Greyton-to-Caledon run; the child can handle a long school day (~10 hours door to door); and the family values IEB examination, smaller class sizes, and a wider subject range.

It is a poor fit where: the total cost exceeds the family budget; the child would struggle with early mornings and long days; the family wants parent governance through an SGB; or the family prioritises place-based education connected to the valley.
