An informal arrangement in which three or four families share the daily school drive to a school outside the valley (usually Caledon). Each parent drives one or two days per week; fuel cost per family drops to a third or a quarter of solo driving. A functioning lift club is the difference between daily attendance at Overberg High School being affordable and being prohibitive for a middle-income family: the annual saving is roughly R30,000 to R40,000 relative to solo driving.

The arrangement requires reliability, coordination, and fallback plans for days when the assigned driver is unavailable.
